By Zoila Palma: The United Nations General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) in 2007 to promote the rights and inclusion of autistic individuals.

Over the past 17 years, the movement has shifted from awareness to active promotion of acceptance, inclusion, and recognizing the contributions of autistic people.

The 2025 WAAD observance, themed “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” will highlight the intersection of neurodiversity and global sustainability.

The event, organized by the Institute of Neurodiversity (ION) and supported by the UN Department of Global Communications, will focus on inclusive healthcare, education, employment, and urban development.

It will bring together experts, policymakers, and autistic voices to discuss how inclusive policies can drive positive change.

ION, a global organization based in Switzerland, advocates for equal opportunities and acceptance for neurominorities.

The 2025 WAAD will underscore the importance of inclusive policies and the contributions of autistic individuals to achieving the SDGs.
