By Breaking Belize News Staff: A New York hostess’ vacation in Belize took an unexpected turn after she was fined $805 for importing cannabis into the country. Yannick Nicole Buie, who arrived from New York, was caught with 30.51 grams of cannabis at the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).
Buie, 21, was detained upon arrival on American Airlines Flight #583 from Miami on March 18. Authorities at the airport detected the smell of cannabis, prompting a search of her luggage, where they found four small, multicolored packages containing the substance. She was handed over to Ladyville police and charged with importation of a controlled drug.
Appearing unrepresented in Belize City Magistrate’s Court #3 on Wednesday morning, Buie pleaded guilty to the charge. She was fined $800 plus a $5 court fee, which she was required to pay immediately to avoid six months in prison.
Outside the courtroom, Buie attempted to speak to the media, but a companion interrupted her. However, she managed to say, “I want to say this, read first.”
Buie, who is visiting Belize on vacation, turns 22 tomorrow, March 20—but with a lighter wallet after her fine.
