By Horace Palacio: A quiet evening near Guanacaste National Park turned into tragedy on Thursday, as two young men drowned in the Belize River, their bodies recovered shortly before 6:00 p.m.
Eyewitnesses say the men were socializing near the water when they decided to swim. Shortly after entering the river, both individuals struggled to stay afloat before disappearing beneath the surface. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but the rescue efforts came too late.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the victims as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding their drowning. Officials are examining whether strong currents, unseen underwater hazards, or other conditions played a role.
As Belizeans come to terms with the tragic loss, families and friends of the victims are left to grieve.
