Mike Bogaert, key figure in Barton Creek Cave tourism, passes away

By Horace Palacio: The Cayo District community is mourning the loss of Mike Bogaert, a respected figure known for his contributions to adventure tourism, particularly at Barton Creek Cave, where he played a key role in introducing and guiding visitors through one of Belize’s most famous underground river systems.

Bogaert’s family announced his passing in a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends in Belize and around the world.

“We are beyond devastated to announce the passing of our Dad, Mike Bogaert,” the statement read. “We appreciate all the help from his friends in the Belize community and support from our family and friends globally.”

Bogaert was widely recognized for his deep knowledge of Belize’s caves and his passion for sustainable tourism. His expertise and dedication helped establish Barton Creek Cave as a must-visit destination, offering canoeing adventures through the ancient Maya ceremonial site. Many who explored the cave under his guidance recall his enthusiasm, storytelling, and profound respect for Belize’s natural and cultural heritage.

To honor his life and legacy, his family has invited the Belizean community to a celebration of life on Saturday, February 29, at Hodes Place in San Ignacio between 1 PM and 5 PM.

Bogaert’s passing is a huge loss to the tourism and caving community in the Cayo District. As friends and colleagues reflect on his impact, his contributions to Barton Creek Cave and Belizean tourism will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
