By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 28-year-old deaf-mute Ministry of Education employee was freed of an aggravated assault charge today after his sister chose to withdraw her complaint in court.
Juwan Bennett, a resident of May Flower Street, was accused of threatening his sister with a knife during a family dispute. However, in an emotional courtroom moment, she requested to drop the charge, explaining, “I am aware of my brother’s difficulties. I think he acted out of frustration that day.”
Bennett, who was provided with a sign language interpreter, stood before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where the charge was read to him. Since his sister maintained she was not pressured into her decision, the prosecution presented no further evidence, leading to the case’s dismissal. Before leaving, Bennett took a moment in open court to apologize to his sister.
On Sunday, February 23, Bennett’s sister reported the incident to the Gender-Based Violence Response and Investigative Unit. She stated that her brother, frustrated after both she and their mother refused to give him money, retrieved a knife from the kitchen and pointed it at her in a threatening manner. Their mother intervened and disarmed him before police were called.
Given Bennett’s condition, authorities arranged for an interpreter from the National Resource Center for Inclusive Education to ensure he understood the charges against him before his arrest.
