By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarría, riding for Cayman’s Phoenix International, excelled as the top Under-23 cyclist, finishing 7th out of 120 riders in the general classification in the second stage of the 46th Vuelta Ciclística Independencia in the Dominican Republic. This was a significant improvement from his 45th place ranking in Stage 1.
Despite the challenging 117 km route between Santo Domingo and La Romana, Chavarría had a remarkable performance, clocking in at 2:27:31—the same time as stage winner, El Boro Cycling Team’s Deivy Capellán from the Dominican Republic.
Phoenix International placed 3rd out of 21 teams with a combined time of 7:22:33, matching El Boro’s.
The seven-day tour commenced on Monday, February 24, and will continue until Sunday, March 2. In the general classification, Robigzon Oyola of the Colombian team Medellín remains in the lead, now with a combined time of 4:52:05. An impressive 103 riders finished Stage 2 together with the same time, allowing Chavarria to move up from 45th to 44th place with a time of 4:56:59, 4:54 behind the leader.
Stage 3 is scheduled for Wednesday.
