By Zoila Palma: People across Latin America are praying for Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, as the Vatican confirmed he is in critical condition at a Rome hospital.
From Mexico to Argentina, Catholics gathered in churches, lit candles, and offered prayers for his recovery, Reuters report.
Argentine priest Adrian Bennardins expressed hope, saying, “We pray for him with trust in God and joy,” praising the pope for making the Church more accessible and inclusive.
Since becoming pope in 2013, Francis, born in Argentina, has maintained a strong connection with the region, where many feel a deep cultural bond with him. “He speaks our language and shares our culture,” said Grisel Jimenez, a parishioner in Mexico City.
In Buenos Aires, a projection of the pope’s image was displayed on the iconic Obelisk, while Argentina’s poor neighborhoods were called upon to join in prayer. Gabriel Indihar, 50, emphasized the power of collective prayer for the pope’s health.
Brazil, the world’s largest Catholic country, also joined the widespread prayers. “We pray for the pope, our church, and the world,” said Helio Martins Da Silva from São Paulo.
Catholics throughout Latin America continue to unite in faith, hoping for a miracle for the pope.
