By Zoila Palma: Two Venezuelan planes arrived in Caracas on Monday carrying about 190 deported Venezuelans, marking a potential shift in relations between the U.S. and Venezuela.
This development is seen as a success for former President Donald Trump’s efforts to pressure more countries to accept their nationals back, AP reports.
Deportation flights from the U.S. to Venezuela had been suspended for years, with a brief resumption in October 2023.
The influx of Venezuelans crossing into the U.S. from Mexico has been a growing challenge. The breakthrough came after Trump envoy Richard Grennell visited Caracas earlier this month, helping to facilitate the return of migrants.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro expressed hope for a “world of peace, understanding, dialogue and cooperation” following the flights, while the Venezuelan government rejected negative portrayals of its citizens in the U.S. media.
The flights came shortly after agreements with El Salvador and Guatemala to accept migrants from those countries, as well as the controversial transfer of Venezuelans to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
While the Venezuelan government confirmed the flights, it did not comment on future deportations.
