By Horace Palacio: The Belize Police Department has confirmed the dismissal of a police officer who shot and killed the Governor General’s pet dog while on duty at Government House.

Reports indicate that the officer drew his weapon and fired at the dog, which police had previously described as aggressive. The case was referred to the Professional Standards Branch, which ruled against the officer, leading to his dismissal.

Commissioner Chester Williams acknowledged the incident, stating that while the dog had a history of aggressive behavior, the officer’s actions were not justified.

The shooting has generated significant backlash, with many calling for a review of police protocols regarding the handling of animals. The Governor General’s office has not yet issued a statement on the matter.
