By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan plans to cull up to 120,000 green iguanas, which have been damaging the island’s agriculture, CNN reports.
With an estimated 200,000 iguanas in southern and central Taiwan, the reptiles, originally kept as pets, have become invasive and are harming farming areas.
Special hunting teams have already killed around 70,000 iguanas, offering bounties of up to $15 each.
Local authorities are encouraging the public to report nests and use humane methods like fishing spears to eliminate the animals.
The iguanas, which lack natural predators, have rapidly reproduced, with females laying up to 80 eggs at a time.
Though not aggressive, they pose a threat to crops, feeding on plants and fruits.
Environmental groups are working with farmers to ensure humane methods are used in the culling process.
