By Aaron Humes: A 27-year-old woman reported to police that she had been scammed out of $650 after attempting to purchase a popular iPhone via a Facebook post.
On January 6, she came across an advertisement in the Buy & Sell group for an iPhone 14 Pro Max priced at $1,500, listed by an individual using the name Martin Williams. After expressing interest, she and Williams entered into an agreement that included a down payment of $650, with the remainder to be paid in two subsequent installments.
She reported that she communicated further with the seller, who provided her with specific bank details for the transaction. Following their arrangement, she visited Belize Bank on January 10 and deposited the agreed-upon down payment into an account under the name of Tavor Jaord Trapp.
Unfortunately, after the deposit, she reported that her communication with Williams ceased, raising her suspicions. She decided to go to Precinct One Police Station to file a report on the matter about 8:00 P.M. the same day.
Law enforcement officials including the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) are now investigating the case. This incident serves as a reminder for the public to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, particularly with individuals they do not know personally. As the investigation continues, community members are advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
