By Aaron Humes: On Monday, High Court Justice Tawanda Hondora issued orders relating to Claim 661 of 2024 between the current executive of the United Democratic Party (UDP) led by Moses “Shyne” Barrow and Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton and former Secretary General Philipa Griffith Bailey.
The court set timelines that would lead to a one-day, in-person hearing on March 31, 2025, with two hours of oral argument for each side.
But the court also called on the parties to attempt to resolve their issues by mediation, if possible, before then, offering the Court’s mediation process to do so.
The issues to be decided either at mediation or trial per Justice Hondora are whether the October 20, 2024 meeting was a constitutionally valid National Convention of the UDP, and whether Taegar-Panton remains a member of the UDP. In the meantime Panton and her team are required to respect the status quo prior to the October 20th convention.
Justice Hondora reasons that this will also resolve potential claims by Patrick Faber, John Saldivar and Beverly Williams about their membership in the UDP and questions about their “constructive resignation/expulsion” from the party.
Since the buzz for general elections is likely February or March 2025, it is left to be seen if the Shyne versus Tracey battle will be resolved in time for the general elections.
