By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National champions, the Saint Catherine Academy (SCA) Seahawks, will face San Ignacio’s Sacred Heart College (SHC) Hawks in the final of the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Center on Saturday.
SCA is in the hunt for their 18th consecutive national high school volleyball title, having dominated the competition since 2005. The number of national wins could have been higher, but no competitions were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, they have won the Central Zone championship for 30 consecutive years.
On Friday, SCA defeated Orange Walk Technical High School (OWTHS) 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-5). Sacred Heart had a tougher match but prevailed over Toledo Community College (TCC) 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-21).
On Saturday, OWTHS will face TCC for third place ahead of the grand finale.
In the boys’ competition, St. John’s College will play Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in the final.
The tournament is hosted by Belize High School of Agriculture in partnership with the NSSSA.
