By Breaking Belize News Staff: A domestic dispute between a couple from Lords Bank Village has escalated into a court case, with the common-law husband, 29-year-old taxi driver Joseph Vaccaro, being denied bail and remanded to Belize Central Prison after his estranged partner, 25-year-old Kristy Elizabeth Dawson, claimed he threatened to kill her.
On Tuesday morning, Dawson, a receptionist, was the first to be arraigned in Court #7, where she faced charges of aggravated assault with a black-handled screwdriver and damage to property, after allegedly damaging Vaccaro’s phone. She pleaded not guilty and expressed fear for her life, stating that Vaccaro had threatened her. Dawson was granted police bail.
Vaccaro, however, was later arraigned on two counts of aggravated assault for separate incidents. The first charge relates to an alleged assault with a machete on October 20, 2024, between Miles 8 and 9 on the Philip Goldson Highway, after the couple’s van ran out of gas. Dawson claimed Vaccaro brandished a machete and threatened her, forcing her to flee. The second charge involves an alleged assault the next day with a knife and scissors, during which Vaccaro reportedly threatened to kill Dawson at their Lords Bank home.
Vaccaro denied the accusations, claiming the couple had a quarrel but no dangerous instruments were involved. Despite his plea, the prosecution objected to bail, citing Dawson’s fear for her life and the prevalence of domestic violence in Belize. The court sided with the prosecution, and Vaccaro was remanded into custody until December 18, 2024.
The case highlights the rising concerns over domestic violence in the country.
