By Aaron Humes: The Opposition United Democratic Party has accused the Government of a series of mistakes with regard to the location of the proposed tertiary level teaching hospital in Belmopan.
First, the Government betrayed its promise in the original loan motion of May 19, 2023 that the hospital would be located on the grounds of the University of Belize, with the UDP saying they failed to properly analyze the situation and then misled Parliament on the location when it had allegedly already agreed to buy private land a month earlier during a Cabinet meeting on April 16. They concluded that the Ministry never intended for the hospital to be built at UB whose land is free.
Next, the Government failed to explain why it has paid more than 20 times the market value of the property in a random location and offered no solution to the potential health risks of undertaking such a massive construction project near a sewer pond. The UDP asks, “Was the Department of Environment even brought in to provide advice for the project? No Tertiary care hospital at a cost of $90 Million dollar should be built near a sewage pond where the surrounding area is flood prone.
Farmers in communities near sewage ponds have long suffered as they pose both an environmental and health hazard.”
The UDP calls on Government to go back to building at UB in the interest of development or allocate the funds to the new hospital announced for Belize City rather than wait for CABEI funding.
“Such a corrupt transaction warrants the resignation of the Minister of Health and everyone involved,” argues the Opposition, which also questions why senior Ministers are defending the transaction allegedly in the interest of campaign contributions.
