By Breaking Belize News Staff: Bernardo Arevalo, heralded as an anti-corruption crusader, was sworn in as Guatemala’s president on Monday after last-ditch efforts by opponents in Congress to block him from taking office.
Arevalo has pledged to bring sweeping reforms to one of Central America’s poorest and most corrupt nations after months of legislative challenges from opponents who tried to keep him out of power. Arevalo promised to tackle the rising cost of living and violence in the country.
He won Guatemala’s elections by a landslide last August.
“Our democracy has the strength to resist and through unity and trust we can transform the political landscape in Guatemala,” Arevalo said moments after taking office. “Never again will there be human rights violations,” he added, as hundreds of supporters gathered in the capital’s Plaza de la Constitucion to sing, dance and celebrate.
A career diplomat, sociologist and son of a former president, Arevalo has faced steady opposition from established political parties such as those of Giammattei, whose allies have repeatedly tried to undermine his election victory.
