By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: For the first time since the massive 2011 earthquake, Japan was forced to issue a tsunami warning after a 7.6 magnitude quake on New Year’s Day destroyed buildings and knocked out power.
According to IndiaTV News, residents were also forced to flee and 48 people lost their lives.
Local authorities were recovering the bodies from under collapsed buildings.
The country continues to reel from the aftermath of about 155 recorded tremors.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the tremor was the strongest quake in the region in more than four decades.
Meanwhile, the Government of Japan ordered 100,000 people in Honshu to evacuate immediately.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that he had instructed search and rescue teams to do everything possible to save lives, even as access to quake-hit areas remained difficult.
