By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 60-year-old Belize City man has been sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing four bottles of Powerade from a business on Cemetery Road.
Mario Haylock, of North Front Street, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted to the theft.
A businessman reported that Haylock stopped at his business, began dancing and then took four bottles of the energy drink before walking away without paying.
The businessman pursued Haylock and caught up with him near Taylor’s Alley, where police officers were informed of the incident. Haylock was detained and later charged with theft.
Footage obtained from a nearby business reportedly captured Haylock taking the drinks.
In court, Haylock said he had six grandchildren to support and claimed he resorted to stealing because the lobster season was closed. He also told the court that he had not been charged with an offence for more than six years.
Court records, however, showed that Haylock was convicted in February 2025 of possessing a drug pipe and was fined $305, which remained unpaid.
Because he was not a first-time offender, Haylock was sentenced to three months in prison. He was also ordered to serve the outstanding $305 fine during his incarceration.
