10 years for a gun — But no rights to protect yourself? Belize must rebalance the law

By Horace Palacio: It’s time Belize starts having a serious conversation about self-defense, specifically, the right of law-abiding citizens to bear arms.

In the United States, the Second Amendment enshrines the right of the people to keep and bear arms, grounded in the principle that a well-regulated militia is essential to the security of a free state. In Belize, however, our laws take the opposite approach — they disarm citizens, even as criminals roam the streets with illegal firearms and terrorize communities unchecked.

The reality is this: the people who follow the law in Belize are the ones left most vulnerable. Meanwhile, criminals acquire weapons through underground networks and are rarely deterred by stricter gun laws. If law-abiding Belizeans were allowed to responsibly own and carry firearms, it could serve as both a deterrent to violent crime and a vital tool in moments of crisis.

A clear example of this occurred during the attempted hijacking of a Tropic Air flight in Belize — a terrifying moment where lives were at risk. In that case, one of the individuals on board reportedly had a licensed firearm and used it to protect everyone else. The situation was defused not by police intervention, but because a brave civilian was armed and ready to act.

That incident is not just a story of heroism — it’s a wake-up call.

When only criminals have guns, the rest of society becomes prey. We must stop pretending that stricter penalties and longer jail sentences alone will reduce gun violence. It hasn’t worked in Mexico. It hasn’t worked in Jamaica. And it won’t work here unless we change the balance of power.

Belize doesn’t need chaos or vigilante justice — it needs a framework. A well-regulated system that allows citizens to legally own, train with, and carry firearms for protection. This could include background checks, mandatory training, psychological evaluations, and strict regulations on use. But the right to defend oneself and one’s family should not be reserved for the police or the politically connected.

We don’t need to copy the U.S. Second Amendment word for word, but we must embrace the principle that the people should not be defenseless in the face of violence. Armed, trained, and responsible Belizeans could become a line of defense in communities where the state is stretched thin.

As the government moves to impose harsher sentences for illegal gun possession — with proposed 10-year prison terms — it must also consider empowering those who actually follow the law. Because protecting yourself should never be a crime.
