By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV has sent an initial emergency donation of €100,000 to support relief efforts in Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that have claimed at least 164 lives and left nearly 1,000 people injured.
The contribution, made through the Apostolic Almoner’s Office, comes as rescue teams continue searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country, Vatican News reports.
The Holy See said the assistance is being coordinated with the Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela, Archbishop Alberto Ortega Martín, and the Archbishop of Caracas, Archbishop Raúl Biord Castillo. The Vatican described the donation as an initial contribution, noting that additional support will be provided as the local Church identifies further humanitarian needs.
Catholic communities across Venezuela have opened parish buildings to shelter displaced families while local Caritas networks organize emergency food, relief supplies and pastoral care. Churches, including Caracas Cathedral and several parish churches, have sustained structural damage, along with seminaries and other Church properties, but church leaders continue assisting those affected by the disaster.
The worst destruction has been reported in the coastal state of La Guaira, where dozens of buildings collapsed.
