The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) under the Ministry of Economic Transformation, entered into an agreement to develop and implement a project entitled “Develop Curriculum and Youth Managers’ Pilot Program”. The Youth Managers Training Program officially kicked off on March 25, 2025, with a dynamic combination of virtual and face-to-face workshops, bringing together aspiring young professionals from across the country. The training is part of a broader initiative to build entrepreneurial and managerial capacity among youth, focusing on start-up and small business development especially targeting farming cooperatives.
The Resilient Rural Belize Programme is a six-year project being implemented by the Government of Belize (GOB) with financing from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Government of Belize and the beneficiary farming cooperatives themselves. IICA envisions equipping young individuals, from beneficiary communities under the RRB, with the necessary knowledge and skills to become effective managers and increase their resilience as farmers against climatic and economic shocks, strengthening their capacity to cope and recover from extreme emergencies or disasters.
The first module comprised of five structured courses and offered participants a hybrid learning experience. While virtual sessions provide flexibility, the in-person workshops allow for rich interaction, hands-on group activities, and assignment presentations, fostering collaboration and deeper learning.
Module 1 covered the following five core courses, each designed to provide practical, real-world skills for managing and growing a business:
Course I: Fundamentals of Math for Start-Up Business Managers
o Lesson 1: Introduction to Basic Math and Financial Metrics
o Lesson 2: Budgeting, Forecasting & Ratios
o Lesson 3: Time Value of Money & Business Problem Solving
Course II: Business Management Skills for Start-Up Business Managers
o Lesson 1: Introduction to Business Management
o Lesson 2: Business Strategy and Marketing
Course III: Contracts and Negotiations to Support Sales for Start-Up Business Managers
o Lesson 1: Understanding the Importance of Contracts
o Lesson 2: Mastering Negotiation Techniques
o Lesson 3: Protecting Business Interests and Building Long-Term Relationships
Course IV: Strategic Plan Development for Start-Up Business Managers
o Lesson 1: Introduction to Strategic Planning & the Startup Environment
o Lesson 2: Developing and Implementing the Strategic Plan
o Lesson 3: Monitoring, Adjusting, and Scaling Your Strategy
Course V: Drafting a Business Proposal
o Lesson 1: Understanding the Business Plan Framework
o Lesson 2: Building the Core Sections of Your Business Plan
o Lesson 3: Finalizing and Presenting Your Business Plan
The program empowers youth with a comprehensive skill set to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship, from financial literacy to strategic planning and effective communication. As the first module unfolds, participants are already demonstrating strong engagement and enthusiasm, setting a positive tone for the months ahead.
