By Zoila Palma: The Climate Change Department recently supported the Department of Youth Services (DYS) in hosting an engaging session focused on climate change science, resilience and action, as part of efforts to equip young Belizeans with the knowledge needed to respond to environmental challenges.
The session forms part of a broader initiative being implemented through a partnership between the DYS and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Belize. Under the initiative, students are tasked with developing their own projects aimed at addressing climate-related problems they identify within their schools and communities.
During the session, students explored the science behind climate change, including how the Earth’s climate naturally changes, why climate change is accelerating today, and the methods scientists use to measure and monitor climate trends. They also examined how climate data and indicators inform climate governance, from international policies and diplomacy to local conservation and community resilience efforts.
The students further explored the social impacts of climate change through hands-on simulation exercises, focusing on climate justice and the vulnerabilities faced by their schools and communities.
The Climate Change Department said initiatives such as this are intended to bring climate change into everyday conversations while ensuring that the next generation of Belizeans is informed and empowered to become climate stewards and help build a stronger, more resilient Belize.
