By Horace Palacio: Jade Smith and Miracle Byers, rising seniors at Charlotte Lab School, are taking their commitment to community service to Belize this summer as student ambassadors for the Young Black Leadership Alliance (YBLA).

The YBLA, a nonprofit focused on developing young Black leaders, organized the service trip, funded by thousands of dollars raised by the teenagers.

“This is an amazing opportunity to shift our perspectives,” Smith said. “We’re excited to help the Belizean community and experience a different way of life.”

The ambassadors will participate in various service projects, including distributing shoes to children, providing meals, and assisting in building a house for a family in need.

“Helping people who don’t have as much as I do makes me feel really good,” Byers shared.

Studies show volunteering positively impacts teenagers, making them less likely to engage in risky behaviors and more prepared for the workforce.

“Being a teenager and dedicating my time to service is my passion,” Smith stated. “It’s preparing me to be a leader in the future.”

Breaking Belize News applauds the efforts of these young leaders and their dedication to serving those in need, particularly the less fortunate in Belize.
