By Horace Palacio: In a tragic incident early this morning, a 19-year-old Belizean man was fatally shot near the Old Mexican Embassy on Newtown Barracks in Belize City. The victim, identified as Leslie Young, a local fisherman, succumbed to gunshot wounds after an attack that occurred shortly after midnight.
According to police reports, the incident happened around 12:45 am when the police were alerted about a shooting near the Old Mexican Embassy. Upon arrival, Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Northside personnel discovered Young lying motionless, face-up, with multiple gunshot injuries. He was dressed in a khaki T-shirt and dark grey ¾ Dickies pants.
Initial investigations indicate that Young was socializing at DK Lounge on Newtown Barracks earlier in the night. Around 12:25 am, he left the lounge, heading towards the Princess Hotel and Casino, when he was targeted. Gunshots were fired in his direction, prompting Young to flee and jump the fence into the Old Mexican Embassy compound, where he ultimately collapsed.
The crime scene was processed by a Scene of Crime (SOC) officer. Several expended shells were retrieved from the site. Young’s body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he was pronounced dead at 2:20 am. His body is currently at the KHMH Morgue, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Belize City police are conducting a full investigation into the murder of Young. They urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing justice to this senseless act of violence.
This incident adds to the growing concerns about gun violence in Belize City, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and community engagement to prevent such tragedies.
