You almost never existed, Belize, now act like you know it

By Horace Palacio:

Let me hand you a number that should stop you mid-scroll.

1,280.

Scientists studying the DNA of living humans published a study in 2023 estimating that, deep in our past, close to a million years ago, our entire ancestral line collapsed to around 1,280 breeding individuals. Not 1,280 nations. Not 1,280 tribes. Roughly 1,280 people, fewer souls than a Saturday market in San Ignacio, and the study estimates they clung on at that knife’s edge for over a hundred thousand years.

Every scientist will tell you such numbers are estimates, and estimates get argued, as they should. But the larger verdict written in our blood is not in dispute, and it is this. Humanity squeezed through a needle’s eye. More than once. Around 74,000 years ago, a supervolcano called Toba detonated in Indonesia, one of the most violent eruptions in two million years, throwing enough ash to dim the sky, and our ancestors walked through it and kept going.

And here is the proof, carried in your own body this morning. Take any two strangers on this planet, a fisherman in Sarteneja and a herder in Mongolia, and their DNA is about 99.9 percent identical. There is more genetic variety in a single troop of chimpanzees than in all eight billion human beings alive. Read that again. One troop of monkeys in one forest is more genetically diverse than our entire species. Why? Because they never passed through the needle. We did. All of us descend from the same tiny band of survivors.

Which means every stranger you will ever meet is, quite literally, family.

Now bring it home, Belize, because this science lands on our streets harder than almost anywhere.

We are a nation that loves its walls. Creole and Mestizo. Garifuna and Maya. Mennonite and East Indian. Roads man and Southside. And above them all, the highest wall we ever built, red and blue. We curse each other across these lines like ancient enemies.

Ancient enemies? The DNA laughs at us. The man you cursed in traffic this morning is your cousin. The family flying the other party’s flag is your blood. Every division we die on is decoration painted on one bloodline that squeezed through one needle together. Our tribal war is not just destructive, which I have written many times. It is, biologically speaking, ridiculous. A family feud among people who forgot they are family.

Second truth. Look at what you are made of.

You exist because of an unbroken chain. Every single one of your ancestors, every one, without exception, survived long enough to pass the torch. Through volcanic winters. Through ice ages. Through plagues that emptied continents. And then your particular Belizean chain kept going through horrors closer to home, through the Middle Passage, through colonial brutality, through the hurricane of 1931 and Hattie in 1961. And the Maya among us carry perhaps the greatest survival story on this soil, a civilization whose great cities emptied a thousand years ago, and yet the people never vanished. Walk Toledo today. The Maya are still here. Collapse came, and they outlasted it.

So when I write, as I did some Sundays ago, that your hard season is training, understand it now at the level of blood. You are not fragile. You are the current holder of a torch that has been carried, hand to hand, through every catastrophe this planet could invent, for hundreds of thousands of years. Quitting is not in your inheritance. Check the record.

Third truth, and this one demolishes our favorite excuse forever.

From an estimated 1,280 souls, humanity rebuilt to eight billion and covered the earth. Now say our national excuse out loud. Belize is too small. Only 420,000 people. Too few to build anything.

Friend, 420,000 is more than three hundred times the population of the entire human species at its lowest hour. The species that started smaller than Dangriga went on to farm every valley, cross every ocean, and touch the moon. Do not ever again tell me that 420,000 survivors’ descendants, sitting on nine thousand square miles of blessed land, are too few to build one good country. The bottleneck buried that excuse a million years ago.

So here is what the number 1,280 asks of you, Belize.

Humility, because you almost never existed. The needle was that narrow. A slightly colder winter, a slightly worse sickness in one small band a million years ago, and no Belize, no you, no anyone.

Kinship, because the stranger is your cousin and the DNA has the receipts. Fight over ideas if you must. But hatred between Belizeans is a family member spitting at the mirror.

And fire, because you are the torch’s current keeper. It crossed volcanic winters and slave ships to reach your hand. It did not travel a million years to be dropped over bad mind, party colors, and excuses.

You are a survivor, descended from survivors, in an unbroken line back to a tiny band that refused to die.

Act like it, Belize.

The torch is in your hand today. Carry it like the miracle it is.
