Yet another alleged mental patient stuck in prison with no Government psychiatrist to conduct evaluation; Senior Magistrate says ‘vulnerable members of society need protection’

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 42-year-old man accused of aggravated assault remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison, as the court grapples with delays in psychiatric evaluations and concerns about releasing vulnerable individuals back into society.

Fred Reyes, an unemployed resident of 2½ Miles George Price Highway, appeared in Court #3 on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Reyes has been on remand since February while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation, which has yet to be conducted due to the apparent lack of available psychiatric doctors.

When questioned by the Magistrate, Reyes stated that he had only been seen by a nurse and not a doctor. He also told the court that none of his relatives have visited him since his incarceration.

The Senior Magistrate expressed concern over the situation, noting that despite the court ordering a psychiatric evaluation over two months ago, no assessment has been completed. The court questioned whether it should release Reyes without a proper evaluation or continue to remand him, effectively prolonging his detention without clarity on his mental state.

Describing individuals like Reyes as “vulnerable members of society who need protection,” the Magistrate ordered the prosecution to gather information regarding Reyes’ mental health history and attempt to contact any family members.

In the meantime, Reyes will remain on remand. His next court date is set for May 22, 2026.

Reyes is accused of aggravated assault against his sister stemming from a family dispute on February 16, 2026. Police allege that during the incident, Reyes armed himself with a kitchen knife, threatened his sister, and placed the weapon against her shoulder, causing her to fear for her life. The situation was reportedly de-escalated when their mother intervened.

Reyes’ indefinite remand, caused by the absence of any Ministry of Health & Wellness psychiatrist to conduct assessments, is just another example of the approximately 40 inmates on remand at the Belize Central Prison stuck in the system as revealed by a previous Breaking Belize News investigation.
