By Horace Palacio: Belizeans are expressing mounting frustration over a year-long delay in the issuance of license plates, stickers, and driver’s licenses, blaming incompetence within the Transport Department for the crisis that has hindered cross-border travel and commerce.
One businessman, who purchased a new vehicle over a year ago, recounted his experience of being unable to drive to the U.S. for business meetings due to the lack of proper documentation. “I’ve paid all the fees, but the Transport Department hasn’t delivered,” he lamented. “This is not just an inconvenience; it’s hurting my business and livelihood.”
Countless Belizeans share similar stories of being unable to cross borders into Mexico, Guatemala, or the U.S. because their vehicles lack the necessary license plates and stickers. The situation has caused financial losses and disrupted personal plans for many.
“I was planning a family vacation to Mexico, but we had to cancel because our new car still doesn’t have a license plate,” said a disappointed mother of two. “It’s unfair that we’re paying for these services and not receiving them.”
Farmers and traders who regularly transport goods across borders are also facing challenges due to the delays. “We rely on our vehicles to transport produce to markets in Mexico and Guatemala,” explained a farmer from the northern Corozal District. “Without proper documentation, we’re unable to conduct our business, and it’s impacting our income.”
The delays have been attributed to what some are calling “gross incompetence” within the Transport Department, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability. Belizeans are questioning why they are being forced to wait for over a year for essential documents that they have already paid for.
The government has acknowledged the issue and promised to take steps to address it, but the lack of progress has only fueled frustration among citizens. “We’ve heard promises before, but we need action now,” said a frustrated driver from Belize City. “This is a basic government service that we have a right to expect.”
With no end in sight to the delays, Belizeans are left wondering how much longer they will have to endure this bureaucratic nightmare. The crisis has become a stain on the Ministry of Transport’s reputation and a major source of public discontent. As the pressure mounts, the demand for accountability and solutions grows louder every day.
