By Zoila Palma: This week, Ya’axché Conservation Trust hosted a delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) including Dra. Ana Touza – FAO representative for Jamaica, the Bahamas and Belize, Alicia Abrahams – Assistant FAO representative-Administration, Armando Aban – FAO National Correspondent for Belize and Silverio Marin – Value Chain Consultant.
The team visited to gain deeper insight into the implementation of the project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Belize’s Maya Golden Landscape”, to learn how the project is progressing, and explore ways FAO can continue to strengthen its support.
Over the two-day mission, the delegation toured model agroforestry farms contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods in the Maya Golden Landscape.
Discussions included opportunities within the beekeeping sector, sustainable non-timber forest products extraction and product development. The team also conducted inspections and verification of equipment provided by the project.
Ya’axché extended thanks to Cucul’s Farm in Big Falls Village for an informative apiary tour and Tikin Ha Farm in Golden Stream for kindly showcasing their impressive agroforestry practices.
Ya’axché expressed enthusiasm to continuing to strengthen its partnership with FAO as we work together to support local communities and conserve Belize’s unique biodiversity.
