By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Saint Catherine Academy’s Nyasha Alicia Alyssa Harris won Belize’s first gold medal on the first day of the athletics competition at the 21st Under-18 CODICADER Games with a dominant performance, clocking 12.31 seconds at Estadio Nacional Jorge ‘El Mágico’ González in San Salvador on Monday.
Harris outran Costa Rican Rihanna Mora (12.55) by 0.24 seconds and Panamanian Alessandra Sarmales (12.88) by 0.58 seconds. In the qualifying heats, Harris set the tone by clocking the fastest time at 12.58 seconds.
“Maximum respect for SCA’s Nyasha Harris!” her school, St. Catherine Academy, said in a social media post early on Tuesday.
“She brought home the GOLD in the 100m at the CODICADER Games. Well done, Mercy girl! Go Seahawks.”
That was Belize’s third medal at the regional games after St Catherine Academy and St John’s College won bronze in volleyball on Monday as well.
The other Belizean in the 100m, Emani Sandoval, did not qualify for the final.
In the Boys 100m, Marlon McLaren qualified for the final and finished in eighth position with a time of 11.94 seconds. Jan Pierrou of Panama won gold in 11.14 seconds. McLaren had finished fifth in his semifinal round heat in 12.05 seconds. Chayil Cabral finished fifth in his heat as well, with a time of 13.64 seconds, but did not qualify for the final.
In the girls’ shot put, Isis Casimiro finished eighth with a throw of 9.41 meters, while Ahmarri Mutrie placed tenth with a throw of 8.82 meters. The winner, Hilary Espinoza of Costa Rica, threw the shot put 12.24 meters.
In the boys’ shot put, Erwin Zetina placed eighth with a throw of 11.27 meters. The winner, Matías Tobar of El Salvador, threw the shot put 14.40 meters.
In the girls’ 800m, Odierre Bautista (2:56.68) and Landria Jones (3:41.87) finished eighth and ninth in the final. Costa Rica’s Eva Blackwood won gold in 2:28.73.
In the boys’ 800m, Brandon Quijano (2:13.12) and Carles Melendez (2:13.46) finished eighth and ninth in the final. El Salvador’s Juan Moncayo captured gold in 2:00.76.
In the boys’ long jump, Ryan Rhaburn (5.52 meters) and Austin Lennan (5.30 meters) finished ninth and twelfth in the final. Costa Rica’s Dominic Dominguez clinched gold with a jump of 6.42 meters.
The athletics competition continues on Tuesday.
