By Horace Palacio: Due to elevated river levels, the Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize has suspended visits to the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve until further notice. This precautionary measure comes as a response to increased water levels that pose safety risks to visitors.
In addition to Xunantunich, all tours at the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Barton Creek, and Nohoch Che’en caves have also been temporarily halted for the same reason.
While these popular sites are closed, NICH has assured that other archaeological reserves remain fully operational. Updates will be provided by the Institute as they monitor the river levels and assess when it is safe to reopen these key tourist attractions.
