By Zoila Palma: On World Water Day 2025, the United Nations highlights the critical issue of glacier preservation, stressing the importance of protecting these vital frozen water resources as glaciers continue to melt at an alarming rate.
As global temperatures rise, glaciers are shrinking, causing disruptions to the water cycle that affect billions of people worldwide.
Rapid glacial melt is altering water flows, leading to unpredictable and extreme changes, including floods, droughts, landslides, and rising sea levels. These shifts are placing countless communities and ecosystems at risk. Meltwater, essential for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production, and healthy ecosystems, is becoming increasingly unreliable.
The UN urges global action to mitigate and adapt to climate change, emphasizing that glacier preservation is a critical survival strategy for both people and the planet. Key to this effort is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to the accelerated melting of glaciers. Additionally, sustainable management of meltwater is essential to protect the resources that depend on it.
As the theme of this year’s World Water Day, “Glacier Preservation”, takes center stage, the UN calls on individuals, families, governments, and companies to play their part.
Everyone must contribute to efforts that reduce global warming and help adapt to the changing climate. The UN encourages spreading the message of glacier preservation, using available resources to engage in the global campaign.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness joins in this global observation.
The time to act is now. Protecting glaciers is not just about saving ice—it’s about ensuring a stable, livable future for generations to come.
