World Oceans Day 2026 highlights urgent need to protect Earth’s Lifeline

By Zoila Palma:  Today is being observed around the world as World Oceans Day under the theme “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean.”

The United Nations is using this year’s observance to encourage people to rethink their connection with the ocean and recognize its critical role in sustaining life on Earth. Covering more than 70 percent of the planet, the ocean supports humanity’s survival and the health of ecosystems worldwide.

According to the United Nations, the ocean produces at least 50 percent of the planet’s oxygen, contains most of Earth’s biodiversity, and serves as the primary source of protein for more than one billion people.

Oceans also play a major economic role, with an estimated 40 million people expected to be employed in ocean-based industries by 2030. In addition, oceans absorb about 30 percent of the carbon dioxide produced by humans, helping to reduce the impacts of global warming.

Despite its importance, the United Nations warns that the ocean is under increasing pressure from human activity. An estimated 90 percent of large fish populations have been depleted, while 50 percent of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed. The organization says current levels of exploitation are exceeding the ocean’s ability to replenish itself, underscoring the need for collective action to restore marine ecosystems and protect ocean resources for future generations.

World Oceans Day aims to raise public awareness about the impact of human actions on the marine environment and to inspire a global movement for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
