World Meteorological Day 2024

Belize joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Meteorological Day 2024 on the 23rd of March under the theme “At the Frontline of Climate Action”. This day commemorates the coming into force of the convention that established the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. This year’s theme highlights the very important role that weather and climate information plays in advancing the sustainable development goals and reducing the impacts of extreme weather and climate-related events on societies across the globe.

The work of National Meteorological Services across the world is of huge societal importance. The benefits of such services include reducing hunger and poverty; improving health and well-being; ensuring clean water and affordable and clean energy; protecting life below the water and life on land; and making our cities and communities more resilient to climate change.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMSB) in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management works very closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise through different projects to enhance climate resilience in the agricultural sector and thereby ensuring Belize’s food security. The department plays a pivotal role in the National One Health Committee, aiming to ensure that weather and climate information are factored in the important decisions made in the health sector, which aims to minimize the risks and impacts of climate and weather-related diseases.

The department collaborates with both the water and energy sectors to enhance their resilience to the impacts of extreme weather and climatic events, thereby ensuring the supply of clean water and affordable and clean energy for the Belizean public. Belize’s water and electricity utility companies are close partners who benefit from the seasonal forecasts issued monthly by the NMSB as well as from regular engagements with the NMSB, including through the National Climate Outlook Fora. Additionally, the NMSB collaborates with other government departments and key players involved in tackling the climate crisis, including agencies within the UN system, other national meteorological and hydrological services, youth and civil society, policymakers and private sector agencies. This ensures that climate-related considerations are factored into all proposed developments in order to minimize risks to Belize’s delicate and pristine environment as well as ensuring that our communities are resilient to the impacts of climate change.

To commemorate World Meteorological Day 2024, the NMSB is hosting an Open Day Fair for primary school students at its headquarters at the Phillip Goldson International Airport on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. The fair will highlight the important work the department does daily in the field of meteorology and climatology as well as in building the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate and weather-related hazards. It will also serve as an avenue to introduce these young minds to the field of meteorology, including the areas of climate science and weather prediction, aiming to build the country’s capacity in this very important field and mobilize and empower present and future generations.
