By Zoila Palma: World Hepatitis Day is observed globally on July 28 to raise awareness about viral hepatitis — a silent but deadly disease that leads to severe liver damage, liver cancer, and over a million deaths each year.
The date marks the birthday of Nobel Laureate Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed its vaccine.
The 2025 theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” calls for urgent action to eliminate hepatitis by 2030.
It highlights the need to break down barriers such as stigma, financial obstacles, and limited access to testing and treatment.
In 2022, 304 million people around the world were living with chronic hepatitis B or C, yet only 45% of newborns received the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth.
The World Health Organization (WHO) urges countries to expand hepatitis services — including vaccination, harm reduction, and especially testing and treatment — and to integrate them into national health systems.
With timely intervention, hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and in many cases, curable.
