By Zoila Palma:  October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in the U.S., a time for advocates, survivors, and supporters to raise awareness about the widespread impact of domestic violence and to promote prevention efforts.

This year, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) continues its campaign under the theme #Every1KnowsSome1, emphasizing that domestic violence is more common than most realize and includes more than just physical abuse.

At Howard University, the Interpersonal Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) and the Title IX Office are hosting a series of events and activities to educate the campus community, promote prevention, and support survivors.

According to the NNEDV, one in four women and one in seven men in the United States will experience domestic violence during their lifetimes.

Health experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasize that violence against women is preventable and that the health sector plays a key role in addressing it.

WHO’s RESPECT Women Framework outlines strategies such as strengthening relationship skills, empowering women economically and socially, and transforming harmful gender norms.

Advocates say that lasting change requires not only community engagement but also strong legislation, adequate funding for prevention and response programs, and continued support for survivors.

As DVAM continues throughout October, organizations worldwide are calling on everyone to take action — because #Every1KnowsSome1 affected by domestic violence.
