By Zoila Palma:  As the world continues to experience record-breaking temperatures, devastating wildfires, stronger storms, and rapidly disappearing glaciers, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is using World Environment Day 2026 to urge people worldwide to take action against climate change. Under the theme “A Global Call for Climate Action,” the campaign highlights the growing urgency of addressing environmental challenges affecting communities across the globe.

According to UNEP, the long-standing goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is now dangerously close to being exceeded. Environmental experts warn that every fraction of a degree of warming increases the risks of severe climate impacts, making immediate action more critical than ever.

The organization emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a reality that is already reshaping lives, economies, and ecosystems worldwide. However, UNEP also pointed to encouraging signs of progress, noting that communities are restoring natural habitats, young people are leading environmental initiatives, and clean energy solutions are transforming cities and households.

World Environment Day 2026 serves as a reminder that there is still time to change course. Through its global #NowForClimate campaign, UNEP is encouraging individuals, organizations, and governments to take meaningful action to protect the planet. The agency stressed that safeguarding the environment is essential for protecting public health, strengthening communities, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
