By Zoila Palma: As plastic pollution reaches alarming levels, World Environment Day 2025—led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)—is calling for urgent global action under the theme #BeatPlasticPollution.
Each year, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide, with half intended for single use. Yet less than 10% is recycled. Roughly 11 million tonnes of plastic enter lakes, rivers, and oceans annually—the equivalent weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers.
Microplastics, particles smaller than 5mm, are now found in food, water, and the air we breathe. Studies estimate that people may ingest over 50,000 plastic particles a year, even more when accounting for inhalation.
Discarded or incinerated plastic poses serious threats to human health, biodiversity, and ecosystems—from mountaintops to the ocean floor.
With scientific solutions available, UNEP is urging governments, businesses, and individuals to accelerate efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink plastic consumption.
Experts warn that without immediate action, plastic waste in aquatic systems could nearly triple by 2040, and air pollution exposure may increase by 50% within a decade.
World Environment Day has been celebrated annually since 1973 and is the largest global platform for environmental outreach, mobilizing millions worldwide.
