By Zoila Palma: Human trafficking remains one of the most urgent and devastating crimes worldwide, largely driven by powerful organized crime groups.
According to data from the United Nations, from 2020 to 2023, more than 200,000 victims were officially identified — a figure that represents only a fraction of the true scale.
Victims are trafficked across borders with increasing frequency and brutality, forced into labor, sexual exploitation, and criminal activities, all for profit. The vast majority of traffickers — over 74% — are linked to organized crime, exploiting legal loopholes, migration routes, and online platforms to operate unchecked.
Despite growing awareness, responses from the criminal justice system are not keeping pace. Law enforcement agencies face the challenge of adapting to a rapidly evolving crime that spans continents and industries.
This year’s global campaign stresses the importance of stronger cross-border cooperation, financial investigations, and the use of technology to uncover trafficking networks. Equally critical is the need to protect survivors, ensuring they receive justice, support, and long-term care.
The United Nations’ Blue Heart campaign, symbolizing compassion for victims and the coldness of traffickers, urges police, border control, and specialized units to engage more actively.
