World Cup hero’s face found on 369 kilos of seized cocaine

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Erling Haaland’s face has been everywhere since July, billboards, trading cards, television screens, after his seven goals in four matches made the Norwegian striker the breakout phenomenon of the World Cup. Now it has turned up somewhere nobody expected: printed on the packages of a massive cocaine shipment seized in Ecuador.

According to Ecuadorian police, anti-narcotics agents acting on an anonymous tip received early Tuesday morning were conducting an operation on the Pan-American Highway when they noticed a suspicious truck near the Colombian border. A search uncovered 370 packages hidden in a false bottom, containing 369 kilograms, some 813 pounds, of cocaine.

The green rectangular packages carried stickers bearing the image of the golden-haired striker, clearly visible in video police released of the bricks spilling from the truck’s hidden compartment. Police offered no explanation for the stickers, but the practice is well documented: drug traffickers commonly label shipments with the names and faces of famous athletes and celebrities as a way of signaling which criminal network produced the merchandise and which client it belongs to. Haaland is not even the first footballer so honoured, the image of Argentine captain Lionel Messi has appeared on another seized package.

The driver, a woman identified by police only as María R., carrying Colombian identity documents, was arrested in Wednesday’s operation in the Guagua Negro area near the border city of Tulcan, about 246 kilometres north of Quito.

The shipment’s estimated value tells the story of the trade’s brutal markup: nearly $842,000 on the domestic market, more than $11 million in the United States, and over $19.6 million in Europe.

Ecuador has become a logistical hub for the hemisphere’s drug trade, where narcotics, 80 percent originating in Colombia and the rest in Peru, are stockpiled and distributed via Central American routes mainly to the United States, with shipments also crossing to Europe. Local gangs allied with Colombian and Mexican cartels manage the routes. Police there seized 80 tons of drugs in the first half of this year, after nearly 215 tons in 2025 and almost 295 tons in 2024.

For the player his fans affectionately call a pretty princess, the cartel tribute is one viral moment he surely never asked for, and a reminder that in the hemisphere Belize shares, the drug trade watches the same World Cup as everyone else.
