By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: This week’s “Wonder Woman Wednesday” by Special Envoy Rossana Briceño is placing the spotlight on Cinnamon Bottaro, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Belize in the United States.
With a distinguished career in diplomacy, she has significantly strengthened Belize’s global partnerships and advanced national interests.
Bottaro’s journey began in Belize City, where her family instilled a strong appreciation for education and service.
Her diplomatic path was ignited during a high school Model United Nations event in 2007. She interned at the Belize Embassy in Washington, D.C., while completing her Bachelor’s in International Affairs and later earned a Master’s in Conflict, Security, and Development from the University of Sussex as a Chevening Scholar.
Throughout her career, Bottaro has served in various key roles, including a seven-year tenure at the Organization of American States, where she worked on development and security policies for the region.
In her current role, she advocates for Belize’s interests and has been instrumental in boosting tourism, supporting the Belizean diaspora, and securing leadership positions within SICA, CARICOM, and the OAS.
Bottaro acknowledges the historical male dominance in diplomacy but encourages young Belizean women to pursue careers in the field, saying, “Historically, diplomacy has been the preserve of men. Countless times in my career, I have been the only woman at the table, but slowly the tide is turning. To the young women of Belize who dream of a career in diplomacy, I say this: if we can do it, so can you. Let our stories inspire you to take your seat at the table, to raise your voice, and to represent our beautiful nation with dignity and passion.”
