By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Special Envoy for the development of families and children, Rossana Briceño features outstanding Belizean women and girls making a positive impact in Belize every week.
Today’s feature is on Deborah Morrison and her journey alongside her son Haydn.
In honor of Autism Awareness, Special Envoy Briceno is shining the light on advocacy in the autism community.
Deborah’s journey began when her son, Haydn, was diagnosed with autism, a pivotal moment that ignited her unwavering commitment to creating a better world for individuals like her son.
Deborah says that when Haydn was born, she was immensely overjoyed.
However, this was the beginning of her journey.
As Haydn grew, Deborah noticed certain differences in his behavior and development.
When Haydn was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with autism, news that sent shockwaves through her heart.
“Shortly after, under different circumstances, I became a single mother. This is the part where things became interestingly difficult for me but also, it became a time when I had to show grit and grab life by the horns and faced the dauting task of being both a mother and father to my son.
With unwavering support from my sister, Tania, and my mother I navigated the trials of single parenthood; Hard times were endured with the help of a tight-knit group of friends who was my support core in times when providing for my family seemed impossible. Haydn, with his unique perspective on the world, proved to be a spirited challenge but also a profound source of inspiration,” Deborah shared.
Then, when Haydn was 6, Deborah was blessed with another baby, Byron who understood and embraced Haydn’s complexities.
“Together, we form a formidable team, providing stability and understanding for Haydn during his most challenging moments.
Now, at 13, Haydn attends Stella Maris Primary School, where dedicated teachers support his growth and development. Despite the hurdles we’ve faced, my family has thrived, bound together by love and resilience. Through it all, Haydn’s determined spirit continues to teach me invaluable lessons about patience, understanding, and the power of unconditional love,” Deborah added.
Special Envoy Briceno noted that Deborah Morrison is more than just a mother; she is a true Wonder Woman, a catalyst for change in the autism community.
“As we feature her this month, let us celebrate Deborah’s extraordinary contributions and rededicate ourselves to building a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is valued and embraced for who they are,” the Special Envoy expressed.
