By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Special Envoy for the development of families and children, Rossana Briceño features outstanding Belizean women and girls making a positive impact in Belize every week.

Today’s feature is on Cancer warrior Yvette Lui Torres.

Yvette’s journey embodies strength, resilience, and the unwavering spirit to overcome adversity.

“We would all like to see life through rose-colored glasses. I believe God chooses those with the strength and fortitude to overcome any obstacles, that may be too heavy of a cross to bear. In my early fifties, my faith was put to the test. When the doctor diagnosed me with renal carcinoma stage 2, I asked God “Why me?” I could not comprehend such punishment for someone who has lived a life per my parents’ Christian upbringing. Thus, I was confused, hurt, and angry and my mind wandered into dark places. My faith wavered. I leaned heavily on my family who all kept reminding me that God had not abandoned me,” Torres expressed.

Torres says that there was only 1 option, surgery and her support group was there for her throughout it all.

“I must thank my husband, my two daughters, and family and friends for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this journey. I will never forget what people say cancer is. Cancer has only one job. Cancer is a diagnosis of death. But in dire situations like these, faith and family can turn this type of tragedy into a hopeful outcome. These were the demons and angels hanging on my shoulders. My decision was written in stone. I opted for surgery and placed my life in God’s hands,” Torres added.

Torres shares that her recovery process lasted 7 months and during that time, her faith was tested.

“Like all recovery stages for cancer patients, there are good days and bad days.

At the beginning of my recovery, I leaned heavily on my faith for it seemed like progress was too slow. As months passed my tenacity and unwavering spirit to live helped me to fight my way back. I would not surrender so easily,” Torres shared.

“As I reflect on my journey, I must show gratitude to God for showing me the light at the end of the tunnel. I must thank the team of doctors, nurses, and staff for their professionalism and their expertise in their chosen fields. I would also personally thank all those who stood by my side, those who prayed for me, and especially my circle of family and friends for their unwavering support,” Torres stated.

Torres encourages all Cancer warriors to be strong in faith.

“I am not alone. You are not alone. If we share our journeys, we will be a beacon of hope for those who need our guidance or perspective to navigate through the turbulence. Reaching out and sharing our testimony serves to create awareness and help anyone who is also going through this journey,” Torres says.
