By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City woman accused of robbing her estranged husband at gunpoint along the Coastal Highway in 2024 is now on trial in the Lower Court, with her own son taking the stand as one of the prosecution’s witnesses.

Elvira Mulholland, who previously spent more than six months on remand after being arraigned for attempted murder and robbery, is now being tried summarily on the lesser charge of robbery. She pleaded not guilty when the charge was read again before the start of trial.

The prosecution is being led by Crown Counsel Maria Nembhard-Santana, while Mulholland is represented by Dr. Lynden Jones and Leeroy Banner.

Mulholland is accused of robbing her estranged husband, Jeffery Mulholland, of $9,000 in cash and an iPhone valued at $4,000 during an incident that allegedly occurred on October 28, 2024, at Mile 12 on the Coastal Highway.

The court heard testimony from three prosecution witnesses as the matter opened. Among them was Mulholland’s son, who identified the accused in the dock as his mother.

He told the court that on the afternoon of the incident, he was at home at Mile 12 with his mother and a cook when he received a call from his stepfather, Jeffery. He said he went outside to wait for him and saw his mother on the roof speaking with a real estate agent.

According to the son, Jeffery later arrived home, went inside for his clothes and a bag, and had a brief exchange with the real estate agent before leaving in his Dodge Ram 1500. About a minute later, his mother allegedly sped off after him in a white Ford F-150 pickup, heading in the direction of La Democracia.

The son testified that his mother drove off so quickly that the vehicle skidded and reversed into a large flower pot before she continued behind Jeffery.

A second key witness, an inspector from the Social Security Board, gave dramatic testimony about what he said he witnessed later that afternoon while driving from Dangriga to Belize City.

The inspector said that around 4:15 p.m., about 15 minutes from La Democracia, he came upon two vehicles in the roadside drain. He said he saw a bald man, about six feet tall, bleeding from the head and leg, waving for help.

At the same time, he said he noticed a woman signaling for him not to stop. As he slowed down, he testified that he saw the woman retrieve what appeared to be a gun from her vehicle.

Fearing for his safety, the inspector said he accelerated away, but while looking in his rearview mirror, he claimed he saw the woman point the gun in his direction and heard a gunshot.

He further testified that after driving about 400 yards away, he stopped and observed in his mirror the woman allegedly pointing the gun at the injured man, who was kneeling on the ground, before taking a black object from him with her free hand.

The witness said the woman then drove off toward Hope Creek, after which he reversed and assisted the injured man, giving him a cellphone to contact police before transporting him to the Hattieville Police Station at the direction of officers.

Under cross-examination, defense attorney Leeroy Banner challenged the inspector’s recollection, suggesting that he only described the item allegedly taken as a “black object” during today’s testimony and not in his original 2024 statement.

The inspector responded that while he could not specifically recall mentioning the color at the time, he remembered telling police it was an object.

Banner also challenged whether it was possible for the witness to identify a gun from approximately 400 yards away. The inspector maintained that the road was straight and visibility was clear enough for him to see the woman pointing the firearm at the kneeling man.

The trial was adjourned and is scheduled to continue on August 3, 2026, when another police witness is expected to testify. The virtual complainant, Jeffery Mulholland, is currently out of the country and is expected to return by that date to give evidence.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the robbery and attempted murder matters be separated. As a result, the robbery charge is being dealt with summarily in the Lower Court, while the attempted murder charge has already been committed to the High Court, where Mulholland is awaiting trial.

Notably, while the prosecution has presented eyewitness testimony about the incident, no witness has yet directly identified Mulholland in court as the woman allegedly seen at the scene of the roadside confrontation.
