Woman who claimed assault and alleged attacker both charged

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A video that went viral showing a woman claiming she was attacked and beaten by a man she knew has resulted in criminal charges being levied against both the accused and the alleged victim.

The accused, 28-year-old Rene Flowers, a Wire Officer at Heritage Bank, was brought to court in cuffs, escorted by police in a prison van. The alleged victim in the video, 25-year-old Andreinae Nathalia Kiara Samuels, a Customer Agent at Choice International was offered police bail and walked to court to be arraigned separately.

Both appeared before Magistrate in Court #5 to be read their charges. Samuels was charged with common assault upon Flowers, while Flowers was charged with harm upon Samuels. Both pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.

Bail was set at $800 plus one surety of the same amount for Flowers, with his case adjourned until June 12, 2024. Samuels was granted bail at $400 plus one surety of the same amount and is due back in court on July 12, 2024.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 22, 2024. According to Samuels’ report to police, she was assaulted by Flowers, whom she has known for two years. She claimed Flowers approached her and punched her multiple times, causing her to fall to the ground. Flowers was detained at 3:16 a.m. and charged for harm.

In contrast, Flowers told police a different version of events. He stated that while at Shi Sha Lounge on Newtown Barracks, Samuels threw a drink at him after confronting one of his friends. Flowers claimed Samuels later approached him aggressively, throwing water from a Crystal bottle at him. He alleged that Samuels then ran towards him, prompting him to hit her defensively, causing her to fall.

Flowers attributed Samuels’ behavior to her disapproval of his friends. Samuels was subsequently detained and charged with common assault on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Both parties await their respective court dates to present their cases.
