By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 20-year-old taxi driver and his passenger are both on remand after police discovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition inside the taxi he was driving on Basra Street, Belize City.

Norman Grant, a taxi driver of Amara Avenue, and Cherries Card, 31, a call center agent of Tigris Street, appeared late Monday evening before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. The pair were jointly charged with kept unlicensed firearm and kept ammunition without a gun license.

Both Grant and Card pleaded not guilty to the charges, which relate to the alleged possession of a black Taurus .9mm firearm and four Aguila 9mm rounds of ammunition.

During the arraignment, Card attempted to address the court, stating, “I was in the taxi. He was giving me a ride. I have a job. I can’t miss work.” The presiding Senior Magistrate explained that she would have the opportunity to present her defense at trial and that the proceedings were for arraignment purposes only.

Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied, and both accused were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 20, 2026.

According to police, on Friday, January 16, 2026, at around 1:45 p.m., officers acting on GI3 intelligence information intercepted a black Ford Escape SUV traveling on Tigris Street, Belize City. The vehicle was believed to be connected to a shooting incident that reportedly occurred earlier that day around 3:00 a.m. in the Newtown Barracks area.

Police followed the SUV as it turned onto Basra Street and parked beside the St. John’s Credit Union Limited building. Officers approached the vehicle and identified themselves. Grant reportedly told police that he was renting the vehicle with the intention to own it.

Police allege that when asked if there was anything illegal inside the vehicle, Grant responded, “Yes boss, I got a gun inside the vehicle, but no license.”

Scenes of Crime personnel were called in after officers observed apparent bullet holes on the right passenger door and rear passenger door. A search of the center console reportedly led to the discovery of a black 9mm Taurus firearm with a fitted magazine containing four live rounds of ammunition.

Both occupants were escorted to the police station and subsequently charged. Police investigations continue.
