By Breaking Belize News Staff: The attempted murder trial against 25-year-old Michael Gladden, also known as “Wannie,” began on Friday before the High Court, with the complainant giving evidence via video link from the United States.

Gladden is accused of attempting to kill a 33-year-old woman during a shooting incident on Sunday, December 20, 2020, in the London Bridge area of Antelope Street, Belize City. The woman, who has since sought asylum in the U.S., testified remotely after the court ensured she was alone and had no documents related to the case in her possession.

She told the court that she was chased and shot at by two men and, after being struck by a bullet, pretended to be dead—“playing passam”—in a swampy area beneath the bridge to survive the attack. She identified Gladden in court as one of the shooters.

The prosecution, led by Joseph Perez of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, presented crime-scene photographs to assist the witness in explaining the sequence of events and the positions of the assailants. The woman remained on the stand until midday, giving evidence in chief.

At the close of the Crown’s case, defense attorney Ian Gray indicated his intention to make a no-case submission on behalf of Gladden, arguing insufficient evidence of identification and the absence of proof of joint enterprise. Candace Nanton ordered that both prosecution and defense submit written arguments by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

The matter was adjourned to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, when the court is expected to rule on the no-case submission.
