Woman survives choking and knife attack at her Punta Gorda home

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Punta Gorda Town woman survived a terrifying attack at her own home, reporting that her former common-law partner choked her with one hand while trying to cut or stab her throat with a sheetrock knife in the other, leaving her with stab wounds to the arm, hands, and armpit sustained as she fought to shield her neck.

According to the Belize Police Department, the 41-year-old labourer of the Indianville Extension area visited the Punta Gorda Police Station on Friday, July 31, 2026, to report the attack, which she said occurred on Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 6:30 p.m.

She told police she was at her residence when she first saw the man approaching her yard accompanied by her 5-year-old son. She instructed him to return the child to where he found him, which he did. About ten minutes later, he returned while she sat underneath her house.

She instructed him to keep his distance and sit on a nearby chair, according to her report. He refused, made threatening remarks that included a claim of violence against another person, and accused her of breaking up his home, saying he would not leave the matter so. She responded that she owed him nothing, had not broken up his home, and wanted no further contact with him.

The man then advanced on her. When she attempted to use her cell phone to call a relative for assistance, he demanded the phone, and upon her refusal, produced an orange-handled sheetrock knife about five inches long from his pocket. According to her report, he came at her with a stabbing motion and uttered the threat, “I wa kill you, and I wa kill miself, I nuh gwen da jail,” before grabbing and choking her with his left hand while raising the knife in his right, attempting to cut or stab her throat and declaring that she was dead.

She fought for her life, punching, kicking, and using her left arm to shield her neck from fatal injury. In the struggle she sustained a stab wound to the left armpit, the right palm, the left forearm, and the left hand, as well as a cut to the left ring finger. The man then released his grip and stomped on the left side of her face. Bleeding and in pain, she screamed for help, causing him to step back briefly, and when he attempted to approach again, she picked up a glass pint bottle to defend herself, at which point he fled the scene. She ran to her room and called a relative for assistance.

She told police conditions were clear, that she clearly identified the man, that she fears for her life, and that she requests formal court action.

The police report does not indicate that the man has been detained at this time, and as he has not been charged, no names are being published. The matter is under investigation.
