Woman says she was defending herself after alleged attack with pint bottle

By Aaron Humes: A Hattieville resident is out on bail after being charged with aggravated assault with a pint bottle and damage to property for allegedly stoning a woman in her back with a pint bottle causing her phone to be damaged.

21-year-old Whitney Dawson is accused of, on Tuesday, April 2, intentionally committing an aggravated assault with an object, to wit, a pint bottle, and without lawful excuse causing damage to the screen of a silver cellphone valued at $400.

Initially, Dawson pleaded guilty but after the facts were read out in court, she did not agree with it.

Dawson explained that she was coming out of her yard to go buy food. She was carrying a pint bottle in her hand and when she saw the complainant staring at her, she asked her a question, and she allegedly responded by slapping her, causing Dawson to retaliate.

The Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on her behalf and offered her bail of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount that she met.

Conditions to her bail is that Dawson interfere with the virtual complainant or any members of her family or any other prosecution witnesses whether directly or indirectly or through any social media platform; she must also stay 100 yards from the complainant.

In her report to police, the complainant said she was approached by Dawson who asked what she, the complainant, had with her and her sister and then attacked her.
