By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 28-year-old woman from San Jose Nuevo Palmar Village has been charged with wounding following a disturbing report of child abuse.

Police say that around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, officers responded to reports of a child being abused at a residence in the village.

Neighbors reported hearing a baby crying excessively and the mother allegedly shouting that she was “tired” of the child and threatening to kill him. Witnesses also reported hearing sounds consistent with physical slapping.

Upon arrival, police spoke with the mother, who reportedly admitted to striking her 17-month-old child because he refused to drink his milk.

The infant was examined by a medical doctor, who observed bruises to the back and left leg, bruising to the right eye, and a swollen forehead.

Following a video-recorded interview and formal caution statement conducted in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, directives were received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

On February 22, 2026, the mother was formally arrested and charged with the crime of wounding.
