By Aaron Humes: A couple’s quarrel over a car left Wilson Hernandez, 28, of Belmopan, dead, and his partner and Hernandez’s niece in police custody. The latter, 21-year-old Christy Guzman, has since been charged with manslaughter.
According to family members, there was an argument at their residence on Sunday morning, and the wife tried to leave in Hernandez’s vehicle, but he objected and appealed to his mother for help. When she declined to intervene, the argument resumed, and at some point, a gun was introduced, and Hernandez was shot in the side of the head. He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crime Investigation Branch, told reporters that the firearm was licensed and that Hernandez allegedly threatened the accused: “Investigation revealed that Wilson Hernandez had a domestic dispute with his common-law wife, and he threatened her. She has a licensed firearm. Thereafter, she passed the firearm to her niece, who fired a single shot towards Wilson Hernandez, causing his fatal injury. An investigation is being carried out. This matter will be forwarded to DPP for directives. The firearm was seized. Both females are in custody in Belmopan.”
The family, however, claims that the niece wasn’t handed the weapon at all; the younger woman allegedly took it from her aunt’s purse and fired on her own.
ACP Romero said police do not know at this time of any history of domestic abuse or violence between the pair.
Hernandez was the owner of Selfie Lounge, which was closed for renovations.
